A move, A studio and the last seat……

What an exciting and busy year it was for both of us with a lot of unexpected but welcomed changes. Kristie and her family are getting settled into their new life in Seattle and other than being a bit chillier than before they are adjusting quite nicely. An opportunity was presented to me in November by the owner of an amazing baby boutique to open a studio next to their shop. Within a week of signing my lease we had walls up, new floors, paint, furniture and the doors opened. It was crazy timing being right smack dab in the middle of my holiday season but well worth the temporary stress. I am still waiting on a couch that has been back ordered for two months (I am told it is sitting in customs as we speak) and then it will be completely finished. I snapped a few pictures to share….

We have decided to move the workshop from the Ybor City location to my studio which means we are also changing the hotel so if you have signed up we will be sending you a new email with all of the details. We will be providing all of the transportation to and from the studio as well as downtown for shooting and eating if you are attending the Extended Day.

We have had such a wonderful response and can’t wait to meet all of the amazing women who will be attending. We have one seat left so be sure to sign up now if you would like to come to Tampa in February!

Big News!!!

We are so excited to be working with Lux on our workshop brand and custom forms, we happen to think that they might just be the most talented women on the planet. And if you have had the chance to work with them or use any of their products you already know just what an amazing company they are. That is why we are SO EXCITED to announce that Eva and Ashley have agreed to speak at the workshop about branding!! Since they know branding like no other we are over the moon that have agreed to take time out of their extremely busy schedules to teach all of you the ins and outs of branding your business right from the start. Did we mention just how amazingly nice they are as well? Seriously, it is going to be awesome!!
We have received a few emails about lodging so we thought we would answer some of those questions here. Lodging is not included in the weekend however, we have secured a group rate at a local hotel for $159 a night. Since it is walking distance to the venue and there is a free shuttle (and a super cool trolley)  there is no need to rent a car. Those of you who have already registered, should have received your welcome email with all of your transportation and lodging details. While you are not required to stay at the hotel we have chosen, we know that half the fun not to mention tons of learning happen in the lobby, bar, restaurants etc so we would love it if you stayed with us. We will be staying at the hotel and plan to be around for questions, chatting and cocktails.
On another note, Kristie and her family left today for their big move to Seattle!!! Is this limited to a certain number of people and might you possibly do a SPRING workshop in Seattle?? A little easier for me to get to Seattle but I don't want to wait until summer to dive into this yummy stuff!

Jen Carl!!!

We could not be happier for our contest winner, especially since she told us she has never won anything in her life!! We also want to thank everyone who entered; the response to the contest was just amazing and humbling and we had so much fun watching the entries flood in! Registration will open tomorrow morning, November 2nd at 9 am. We are looking so forward to meeting all of you lovely budding Photographers!

Since I know we are all dying to know more about Jen we did a little interview with her this morning.

Where are you at in your photography journey and where do you hope to be a year from now?

Right now I am in the process of starting my own business. I have been a photographer since I was 5 and it most definately was my first love. I took classes in high school and read up on everything that I could over the past 11 years after. I am the one who takes the family photos for friends and family and even did a wedding for a friend who didn’t have the $ for a pro but never had the confidence or drive to start my own business. Finally when I had my son this past January, I found myself taking a million pics of him and being a mom now I wanted him to grow up seeing his mom do what she loves to do and not hating going to work at a job she cant stand.

What brought you to the Launch site and what did you think your chances of winning were?

I had seen it on creative mama and a mention in clickin moms and then I saw it on Joyce Smith Photography (Wordsmith) blog – I must admit, I stalk her blog – lol. I used to live in Philly and admire her work! So I thought since I keep seing this everywhere I would check it out. When I saw the contest I entered my name. Must have been fate:)

What are you most excited to take away from the workshop?

Everything. I checked out the itenerary and there is nothing I couldn’t benefit from. I am very excited how to learn how to not rely on my flash and use natural light more!

What is your favorite thing in the world to do?

Spend time with my family and take pictures of course! I also love to travel. It has tapered off quite a bit since I had my son, but I have seen so many amazing places and hope to start again soon!

If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you go and who would you take?

I would take my son to San Francisco – my other love, and absolutely Europe. I can’t even pinpoint a specific place – just all of it! The culture and archetecture and beauty is amazing.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?

Well I am quirky and love to have fun. I am a mom of a very busy 9 month old:) I have a wonderful husband who is extremely supportive, so I have to say that I am very blessed! I am a country girl all the way even though we live in the city now. My goal is to run a successful photography business.

The response to the seat giveaway has been amazing to say the least. We have so enjoyed reading each and everyone of your comments and yes we have read each and every one! We have decided to move the Registration date to Monday November 2nd so that we have a chance to pick and announce a winner before sign ups begin. I mean really we believe that the winner should have a chance to relish in their winnings for at least a day, don’t you?? So Registration will open promptly at 9 am (remember we are on eastern standard time) and seats will be sold on a first come first serve basis. These images are a mixture of mine and Kristie's but I used the 28-70 2.8 for my shots (the two maternity and dad lifting baby in the air). I also have the 50mm 1.4 which I use exclusively for newborns and sometimes I throw it on for portraits as well. It is a super sharp super yummy lens. To answer your question about the workshop, it is really designed for the beginner because we will be hitting the technical side of things pretty hard but I sure would love to meet you ;) Call me if you have specific questions!

We thought it would be fun to start off our first few posts with interviews with Kristie and I and of course our amazingly organized, gifted, creative and all around amazing assistant, Amy.

In five words or less, how would you describe your photography style?

Simple, truthful, fun and always evolving (sorry that was six )

What inspires you?

Anything or anyone that is real

What makes you happy?

My husband, my kids, my friends, good food, crawling into bed with freshly cleaned sheets, kids in our bed in the morning, warm sun on my skin, making people happy and photography of course. I could go on and on, I am a pretty happy person.

What’s your workspace like?

We turned our “formal living room” into my office. We added a wall, and put in a set of French doors complete with a corner full of toys for Brody (my one year old) for the times when he is happy to play while I work. It is very comfy and perfect for me. I like having a space where I can work when I need to but walk away when I am done.

So, how do you make it all work… business… family life… happy marriage?

That has been a work in progress and just like a strong marriage, something I work on every day. I have learned that if I don’t take control of my business, it will control me and my time. I love my job and I am living my passion, but it is a job. My family is the most important thing to me so devoting the appropriate time to each aspect of my life is key.

What do you love most about what you do?

Definitely the flexibility and freedom to create my own schedule is huge for me especially while my kids are young. I am a total people person, from a young age I have loved talking to and getting to know people. I genuinely enjoy the relationships that I build with my clients so being able to capture their family in a real way is hugely rewarding for me.

What are you doing today that wouldn’t have imagined doing five years ago?

Running a successful photography business while simultaneously raising four kids!

What one piece of advice would you give to someone beginning a career in photography?

Don’t rush in. Take time to master your skills and build a strong foundation for your business before you ever announce yourself to the world. I wish I had been given that advice when I was starting out; it would have been life changing.

What are you grateful for today? I am grateful for the time I had with my dad because I feel it shaped who I am, I am grateful for my mom because you never get too old to need your mom, I am grateful for my relationship with my sister , I am grateful that I married my best friend, I am grateful for my insanely smart and hilarious children who continue to teach me more than I could ever teach them, I am grateful that I have some of the best girlfriends on the planet and I am grateful that I am right where I want to be, in my life and in my career. Life is good.

And just for fun…

If you had three wishes what would they be?

I would never be able to come up with three wishes because I would spend so much time over analyzing my wishes I would never be able to make a final decision.

Read any good books lately?

People actually have time to read books? The last book I read was a breastfeeding book, lol!

Favorite snack?

Hmmm. How does one choose one snack? I love to snack. OK, I am going to go with artichoke dip.

If you had to pick one song to be your theme song, what would it be?

That’s easy, the circus theme song. You know the one I mean!

If you could be a super hero, what would your super powers be?

I would be the super organized, never tired, always available, never grumpy, supermom/superwife/superfriend/superphotographer with a sparkling clean house.

In five words or less, how would you describe your photography style?

Bright and Fun

What inspires you?

Connections… I love watching people interact with one another. Other sources of inspiration… magazines, movies and music.

What makes you happy?

Smiling! I know that sounds silly, but it’s true. Balloon sword fights with my twins, “girl time” with my friends, Quigley’s big long floppy ears, snuggling with my hubby (my best friend), crushed ice, the amazing families and children that I am blessed to work with. Panera bread breakfast sandwiches, cute fuzzy socks and comfy PJ’s all bring me much joy too!

What’s your workspace like?

We turned an open playroom into my office. We added a wall and this really old but really amazing Dutch door (during non-working hours, we use it to play “ice cream shop”). It’s a bright happy place thanks to my yellow walls.  My desk was my great-grandfather’s desk that my dad refinished.  I have to admit though, have laptop, will travel… all around my house to proof.

So, how do you make it all work… business… family life… happy marriage?

I’m not exactly sure that I do, but I give it my all everyday. It’s about balance and checking in with and being kind to one another, evaluating and then reevaluating and sometimes it’s about having dessert first!

What do you love most about what you do?

The ability to be able to capture moments and feelings in images that will be a part of my clients’ family history.  It’s truly an amazing thing!

What do you love to indulge in?

Dessert. Especially chocolate!

What are you doing today that wouldn’t have imagined doing five years ago?

Running a successful photography business while raising twins, all while packing up our life and house for our BIG move to Seattle, Washington!

What one piece of advice would you give to someone beginning a career in photography?

OK, I have two… ALWAYS be true to you! If it makes your heart smile, go for it.  And, take your time building a strong foundation before taking that huge leap. Remembering that this is a business is huge! It takes time and planning.  Having your practices and policies and skills in place before putting yourself out there is so very important! If I only knew this when starting out, Oh, the heartaches and headaches I would have saved myself!

What is your favorite photography accessory?

I would say my 50mm 1.4 lens, it’s a fabulous portrait lens, but look out 24-70 2.8 lens, I have my eye on you!

What are you grateful for today?

So many things…. I am grateful for the health of our family and my hubby’s courage and dedication to get there! I am grateful for the AMAZING women in my life, for having a roof over my head and food on our table, I am grateful for laughter, hugs, opportunities and smiles.

If you had three wishes what would they be?

1) To be able to pack up my friends and family and take them with me to Washington

2) That my kiddos live very long, happy and healthy lives

3) And, that all our dreams for our family come true

What are you favorite websites?

I HEART Erin Very’s and Tara Whitney’s sites–a quick visit (although that’s hard to do) always puts a smile on my face. Etsy, oh Etsy–I could get lost on there for days! Mama Manifesto and Real Simple are favs too!

What will you never wear?

I need to be careful with this one because I once said skinny jeans and now I own and love a pair of skinny jeans. But definitely (and I think this will stick) a thong bathing suit.

Favorite snack?

Lately, it’s roasted pumpkin seeds and oranges.  Last week though, it was nachos!

If you had to pick one song to be your theme song, what would it be?

Groove is in the Heart (Deee-Lite). Just thinking about it makes me want to dance!

How would you describe your personal style?

Classic & lovely. I like clean, simple lines. I’m attracted to things that speak to me.

What inspires you?

God in people.

What makes you happy?

Moments with loved ones- any kind of moment that gives me pause- to reflect, to laugh, to cry… I love it all!

What are your must haves?

I purpose to not have any “must haves”, but I do enjoy a good, strong cup of coffee in the morning.

What is on your desk?

Day planner, printer, label maker, laminator.

What do you never leave home without?

Day planner, diapers & sippy cups.

What do you love to indulge in?

Starbucks, good books, naps on the couch.

How do you stay organized?

I live pretty comfortably with the old adage, “ a place for everything and everything in it’s place”. I systematize as many routines as possible. If something is going to happen more than once, then I make a routine/fact sheet for it. I pick up at the end of every day and plan for the next one before I go to bed.

What are you grateful for today?

My generous husband.

If you had three wishes what would they be?

1) Adopt orphans

2) Have my back yard landscaped with a play area

3) A Keurig coffee maker

What did you eat for dinner last night?

Chicken pasta casserole provided by a friend. Yummy.

Read any good books lately?

YES- Same Kind of Different As Me by Ron Hall and Denver Moore. This book is so good.

If you had one hour to yourself, what would you do?

Too often, sleep. Favorite choice, though, would be to lay be a fire and read a good book or just pray and be still.

What is one of your favorite childhood memories?

Going out on our boat and water skiing. I loved the feel of the sun on my skin at the end of the day (we grew up in Seattle so this was a rare occurance).

Paper or plastic?

Paper

What is your favorite large animal?

Hippopotamus. Mostly because I like saying it.
